The Coking Process: Transforming Oils into Petcoke:

In coker units, residual oils from earlier distillation processes in the petroleum refining industry undergo high-temperature and high-pressure treatment. This process efficiently removes gases and volatiles, separating the resulting material into light and heavy oils, with petcoke being the solid carbon-rich residue. These coking processes are integral to the petroleum industry, especially delayed coking, which is a common technique employed.

Types of Petcoke: Fuel and Anode Grade:

Petroleum coke exists in two primary grades: fuel grade and anode grade. Fuel grade petcoke typically contains higher levels of sulfur and metals, making it suitable for combustion as a fuel source. On the other hand, anode grade petcoke possesses lower levels of sulfur and metals and undergoes additional processing to meet specific requirements. This processing includes calcination in a rotary kiln to eliminate volatile hydrocarbons, resulting in a product ideal for the aluminum and steel industries, where it is primarily used in the production of anodes.

Environmental Impact of Petcoke:

It is essential to note that petcoke has environmental considerations due to its carbon content. When burned, petcoke emits 5% to 10% more carbon dioxide (CO2) per unit of energy compared to coal. Additionally, on a weight basis, petcoke releases 30% to 80% more CO2 than coal. However, the precise difference in CO2 emissions depends on factors such as the moisture content in the coal. Higher moisture levels increase CO2 emissions per unit of energy, while volatile hydrocarbons in coal and coke have the opposite effect, reducing CO2 emissions per unit of energy produced.
